Twitter,

Exclusive Interview on Ai Weiwei
The Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) mouthpiece media,
Global Times, announced an exclusive interview withrights activist artist
Ai Weiwei. This is the first ever since Ai's release on June 22.
It is believed that the CCP is attempting to deal with thehuge public
outcry following the Der Spiegel's article,"The Situation of Ai Weiwei
during His 81-Day Detention,"which was published on the day before.
The English edition of the Global Times publishedtheir exclusive interview
with Ai Weiwei on August 9.The article is titled "Ai Weiwei: Breaking the
Silence."
It said that Ai agreed to the interview, on the condition thatno questions
would be asked about his detention.Despite the sensitivity surrounding his
case,Ai nevertheless talked about his detention experience.
The article stated that although Ai returned to a normal life,
he was not allowed to use Twitter, one of the conditions of his
parole. However, he still views news online.
Writer, Bei Ling, published an article in German,
"The Situation of Ai Weiwei during His 81-Day Detention,"on the Der Spiegel
website on August 8.
Bei Ling considered it a responsibility for himto expose the facts
surrounding Ai's detention, since Bei was imprisoned before andknows the
inhumane treatments in the prisons.
Bei Ling: "Ai said, unlike Zhang Zhixin, who could still write with her
blood from her cut throat,he was always monitored, even in the toilet and
shower. There are always two guys keeping a close watch on him.He suggested
that the level of surveillance is even higher thanthat of people who were
inhumanely treated."
Bei Ling told reporters that Ai's phones were even monitored.
The information in his article was collectedfrom Ai's family, friends and
those who visited him.
Bei regards the Global Times' exclusive interview with Ai,as an attempt by
the CCP to silence foreigners.
Bei Ling: "Based on the information I obtained from China,
the interview was conducted to smooth out the potentialnegative comments of
Ai's detention. The State Security Department decided to have Aiinterviewed
by only one media, which was exclusively available to overseas readers,in an
attempt to defuse the influence of the Der Spiegel article.
Gao Yu, an ex-Xinhua reporter, said,"The CCP not only hides the truth using
its media, but also forces people to see what the CCP wants them to see.
Given the fact that the Internet cannot be controlled, they then need to be
the first to release info on new events.
Gao Yu: "The CCP is trying to block the domestic mediaand to block the
international media. The CCP fears the truth.Ai was treated badly in
prison. The CCP doesn't want foreign media to report Ai's situation,as that
could affect China."
Ai posted a number of articles on Twitter,on the same day as the Global
Times article release.Ai recounted the mental and physical torture ofhis
business partners, who were arrested alongside him.He appealed to the
public to pay attention to
the upcoming court sessions of rights activist, Wang Lihong, and detained
writer, Ran Yunfei.Ai's article was soon forwarded and copied.
Ran Yunfei, a renowned Sichuan writer, was releasedlater that night, August
9, after a 171-day detention.
